Both Fairgrove and Nelsons named as finalists for the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019

Both ourselves and East Midlands-based law firm Nelsons have been named as joint finalists in the Deal of the Year category for the 2019 East Midlands Bricks Awards.

Organised by East Midlands Business Link, the East Midlands Bricks Awards recognises and celebrates the achievements and high standards set by both companies and individuals within the building sector across the region – including commercial and public projects, offices, industrial, residential and community projects.

This year’s awards night will be held at Trent Bridge Cricket ground in West Bridgford on Thursday 28th March – with 10 category winners announced including Contractor of the Year, Developer of the Year, Deal of the Year and Excellence in Design.

Both Fairgrove and Nelsons have been named as finalists as part of the same entry for Deal of the Year – following an announcement in early 2019 of the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at the Brewery Yard development in Kimberley.

The Brewery Yard is the latest phase of redevelopment and regeneration for the historic former Kimberley Brewery. We began work on the site in 2015 and have since completed the first phase, as well as 75% of the second of five phases of development at the site – which will see a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

Completion of the deal to purchase the remaining land means that the preserved Grade II* listed buildings surrounding the former brewery yard – including the kilns, kiln stores, tower and the maltings – can now be repaired and converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub, containing a range of office spaces to boost the local economy.

Speaking about the news that both Fairgrove and Nelsons have been named as joint finalists, our Sales and Marketing Manager Vanessa Gregory said, “We are delighted to see our deal to acquire the remaining land at The Brewery Yard named as a finalist for the Deal of the Year category at the East Midlands Bricks,”

She continues, “By working in close partnership with Nelsons at every stage of the deal, we have guaranteed the successful completion of the necessary legal requirements of the acquisition process and secured the future of the historic Grade II* listed buildings on the site for future generations to enjoy. We look forward to completing the Brewery Yard phase and continuing the redevelopment of a site which forms an integral part of the local community of Kimberley”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, which represented Fairgrove throughout the purchase process, is delighted with the news and said, “We’ve been working on the Brewery Yard project alongside Fairgrove since 2016. It’s an important and significant development for the town. We are thrilled to have been recognised by the East Midlands Bricks Awards.

“The brewery, which was a major employer in the area, was sold in 2006 and has stood empty ever since. It’s great that the historic buildings, some of which date back to the 19th century, will be restored and preserved for future generations, alongside stylish new homes, cottages and apartments.”

Company MD Steve Midgley speaks at a special careers day at Heanor Gate Science College

We were delighted to be able to organise and attended a recent careers day at Heanor Gate Science College – speaking to students about the range of careers open to them in the homebuilding sector upon leaving school.

Company MD Steve Midgley, who is also a Governor at the school, helped to plan and coordinate the event with several other guest speakers joining him on the day – including representatives from the nursing sector as well as employees from the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and Rolls Royce.

The aim of the day was to pass on important careers advice to the children with the hope of better informing them about future career paths  – including those outside of further education.

As well as Steve, our Design Assistant and Homebuilding and Skills Partnership Champion Carrie Stenton attended on behalf of Fairgrove to share her expertise to a group of year 10 students. This included explaining the complete build process as well as the range of careers and trades open to people at apprenticeship level and higher.

Speaking after the event, Steve said, “The enthusiasm and interest shown by the students in homebuilding and the range of trades open to them when they leave school was very encouraging to see,”.

He added, “It’s no secret that there is a shortage of young people entering our industry and at Fairgrove, we are committed to meeting the skills shortage – which has been demonstrated through our apprenticeship schemes in areas such as joinery and bricklaying. We hope that through our attendance at the careers day, we have inspired some of the next generation to consider a future career within the homebuilding sector.”

Gemma Tyers, Sixth Form Achievement Leader at Heanor Gate Science College said, “I would like to extend a big thank you to Steve, Fairgrove and all the other guest speakers that gave up their time to attend the careers day,”.

“Having speakers come in and pass on this information is vital because we are aware that not all children want to go to university – so having knowledge of the variety of careers open to them really opens their eyes and will hopefully inspire some of them to consider one of these paths in the future.” she added.

Fairgrove and Nelsons named as finalists for Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards

Both ourselves and East Midlands-based law firm Nelsons, have been named as joint finalists in the Deal of the Year category for the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, recognises both small and large-scale projects and redevelopment schemes from across the midlands – with winners named in 11 categories. This year’s prestigious black tie ceremony will take place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on Thursday 20th June and is set to be attended by businesses, construction firms and local authorities from across the region.

Both companies have been announced as finalists under the same entry in the Deal of the Year category, following an announcement in early 2019 of the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at our Brewery Yard development in Kimberley. News of this latest nomination follows both companies taking home the award for Deal of the Year at The East Midlands Bricks Awards in March this year.

The Brewery Yard is the latest phase of redevelopment and regeneration for the historic former Kimberley Brewery after work began on the site in 2015. The completed development will see a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

Completion of the deal to purchase the remaining land means that the preserved Grade II* listed buildings surrounding the former brewery yard – including the maltings, kilns, kiln stores and tower – can be repaired and converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub – with a range of modern office spaces.

For our Managing Director, Steve Midgley, being named as a finalist alongside Nelsons for the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards is a testament to the company’s ethos and values as a modern house builder that cares about local heritage and communities.

“Not only do we believe in building quality new homes for the purchasers of today, but we are passionate about preserving and redeveloping historic sites wherever possible – such as the Grade II* listed buildings at the former Brewery Yard in Kimberley,” said Steve.

“We had a shared long-term vision for The Brewery Yard with the local authorities and once completed, this phase will fulfill the plans laid out by providing high-end city living and work spaces in an attractive location – without the expensive city centre prices,”

He continues, “Thanks to our close partnership with Nelsons, the necessary legal requirements of the acquisition process have been successfully completed. This enables us to now complete the Brewery Yard phase and continue the redevelopment of a site which forms such an integral part of the community of Kimberley.”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, which represented Fairgrove throughout the purchase process, is delighted with the news and said, “We’ve been working on this development in partnership with Fairgrove for the past three years, so it is fantastic to have been named as joint finalists in the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards. The Kimberley Brewery site is an important and significant development for the town, which will see historic buildings being restored and preserved for future generations, alongside the construction of stylish new homes, cottages and apartments.”

Fairgrove and Nelsons take home the Deal of the Year award at the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019

Both ourselves and Nelsons are celebrating a joint award-win after both businesses were named as winners in the Deal of the Year category at the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019.

The annual event brings together construction professionals from across the region to celebrate the achievements and high standards set by both businesses and individuals within the building sector throughout the previous twelve months.

We put forward a joint entry for the Deal of the Year category following the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at the Brewery Yard development in Kimberley – formerly home to Hardys and Hansons Brewery and adjacent to our Hansons View development.

Nelsons represented us throughout the purchase process and both businesses were named as winners for a deal which has seen the successful preservation of several historic Grade II* listed buildings at the former brewery yard – including the kilns, kiln stores, tower and the maltings. Restoration of these buildings will see them converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub alongside a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

This year’s glittering East Midlands Bricks Awards ceremony was held at Trent Bridge Cricket ground on Thursday 28th March – with ten winners announced on the night. Categories recognised a variety of projects, businesses and individuals for demonstrating excellence in construction including Developer of the Year, Contractor of the Year, Excellence in Design and Deal of the Year.

Our Managing Director Steve Midgley is delighted to see both companies take home the award for Deal of the Year – with the news proving testament to months of hard work that has guaranteed a bright future for the brewery yard.

“It is fantastic to see this landmark deal recognised at such a prestigious event as the East Midlands Bricks Awards – especially when you consider the high calibre of entries this year,” said Steve.

“Throughout every stage of our work at the former Hardys and Hansons Brewery, we have ensured wherever possible that the character and history that exists at the site is retained – and the brewery yard is no exception.”

Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Vanessa Gregory, sees the partnership with Nelsons as crucial to this success and is excited for the future of the development – “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Nelsons because through close collaboration, the future of the historic Grade II* listed buildings has been successfully secured to the benefit of the local community of Kimberley,”

“We are excited to commence work on this latest phase and watch the site continue its highly anticipated transformation.”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for both organisations and we’re thrilled to have won the award as a partnership.

“Projects such as this are hugely rewarding to work on – it’s great to be able to be part of such a significant development and see the benefits it will have on the local community. I am personally very proud to be part of an award-winning team and look forward to seeing the development come to fruition.”

Interest growing in Brewery Yard development as work starts on historic buildings

We are calling for people to register interest in the next phase of our Hansons View development in Kimberley, as work gets underway to transform the historic former brewery yard.

Hansons View and the Brewery Yard are intimate developments situated on the site of Kimberley’s former Hardys and Hansons Brewery. We agreed to transform the site to provide brand new build and converted homes which will boast an extensive range of high quality and contemporary 2, 3, 4 and 5-bed designs – ideally situated in a highly sought after area.

Large parts of the former brewery have been preserved and will be restored as part of the work – including the tower – keeping a nod to the former brewery which served the town for over 170 years.

Hansons View and the Brewery Yard developments are perfect for commuters, with their close proximity to Nottingham, the M1 and A610 – putting East Midlands Airport, Derbyshire and the wider Midlands within easy reach. Kimberley is also situated close to the Giltbrook Retail Park, which houses IKEA and a range of other retail and dining outlets.

In 2018 we saw our first occupations on the site of the former brewery, with work to finish off the first phase well underway. With limited plots still available in the first phase and construction set to start on the brewery yard phase, our Sales and Marketing Manager Vanessa Gregory is urging people to register their interest now in order to avoid disappointment.

“We have seen a fantastic level of interest with strong sales and now, our first occupations on the former brewery site,” said Vanessa.

She continues, “We are offering those keen to register their interest in the remainder of phase one and the upcoming brewery yard, first refusal on a property with a deposit of just £100 up front,”

“It is an exciting time for the town and the local community of Kimberley as we continue to redevelop such an iconic location!”

Earlier this year, we also announced that we were asking for relatives of fallen First World War soldiers that worked at Hardys and Hansons Brewery, to come forward and ensure their ancestors were included on a special commemorative plaque. The plaque is due to be unveiled in the brewery yard ahead of celebrations to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War, later this year.

Investment made in employee mental health support

As an employer, we believe that there shouldn’t be a stigma attached to the topic of mental health and it shouldn’t be taboo to discuss how you’re feeling – especially in the workplace.

Recent statistics from Building Mental Health reveal that two construction workers per day in the UK take their own lives – so this year we have made it a priority to invest in increasing mental health support and awareness in order to improve employee wellbeing.

In March of this year, we signed up to support the Home Builders Federation’s Mental Health Awareness Campaign and become an official partner of Building Mental Health – an online portal built by industry experts, providing support and advice to increase awareness of mental health.

In doing so, we have gained access to a wide range of resources that will help us to achieve a better mental health culture, including a framework, adaptable Tool Box Talks, online tutorials, helpline packs, Mental Health First Aid training courses and much more.

These tools allow us to provide our employees with internal support or help in finding professional mental health advice.

Simon Midgley, our Land Director and Mental Health Ambassador, believes that this recent investment is a crucial part of our wider commitment to safeguarding all employees at Fairgrove.

“The culture within the construction industry is changing and must continue to change,” said Simon.

“Historically, people think that it’s wrong to feel anxious or depressed and won’t speak up about it. Often, they’re told to ‘man up’ or ‘hold it together’ and this is a very outdated view. The moment people open up and talk about how they’re feeling is the same moment that they start to gain access to the support they need,”

“We are passionate as a company about ensuring that our employees know that they can talk to a member of the team about delicate subjects, whenever they need to.”

All of our offices and sites now have signage explaining the processes employees should follow if they require support. Employees are also encouraged to be open about their emotions through either a face-to-face chat or conversation over the phone in order to receive the support they need at Fairgrove.

MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry, learns how Fairgrove is investing in the future during visit to its redevelopment of the former Kimberley Brewery

Conservative MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry, has learned how Ilkeston-based house builder Fairgrove  is investing in the future talent of the building trade during a visit to its redevelopment of the former Kimberley Brewery last week.

Ms Soubry visited Fairgrove’s Hanson’s View development on the site of the old Kimberley Brewery and met six new apprentices that have recently joined Fairgrove across multiple trades.

These six new apprentices will be spread across bricklaying and joinery and follows recent success with a number of trainees completing apprenticeships for the company. One apprentice, Jordan Haywood, won Apprentice of the Year last year while studying at Webs Training College.

The new-starters will be joining Fairgrove’s current team in redeveloping Hanson’s View in Kimberley – creating a unique development of characterful refurbished old properties and stylish contemporary new homes on this currently run-down site. It’s a development that is generating much excitement amongst the local community and further afield thanks to its prime location, and Anna Soubry was impressed with Fairgrove’s vision for the local area.

“It is a credit to Fairgrove  to be investing in the future so heavily and hiring apprentices within the building trade,” said Ms Soubry. “Meeting the skills shortage and continuing to build quality new homes is crucial in order to meet demand, and I am delighted to see Fairgrove is tackling this issue head on,” she added.

In addition to the trade apprentices, Fairgrove has also appointed an 18-year-old school leaver as a Management Trainee, and will be sponsoring him and another staff member through a university degree apprenticeship course at the University of Derby.

“Fairgrove has been in business for 22 years and for the majority of that time, like similar businesses to ours, we have largely worked with subcontractors,” explains Fairgrove MD and East Midlands Chamber of Commerce board member, Steve Midgley. “There is a national skills shortage within certain trades, and as a company, we’re keen to develop trainee programmes in key areas with large shortfalls in order to create a skilled in-house workforce.”

Steve Midgley continues, “For a small company this is a massive investment in training and the future, but we truly believe it is the way forward to set us apart in our industry. We want to build a team that is proud to produce the best quality new homes in the region and our aim is to train the next generation so that we continue these high standards for many years to come.”

Next phase of redevelopment underway for iconic former brewery site

We are continuing our momentum at the iconic former Kimberley brewery with work now underway to restore buildings on the Brewery Yard phase – promising a range of new and converted 2, 3 and 4-bedroom designs.

This latest phase includes the restoration of the Grade II* listed buildings surrounding the former brewery yard – the maltings, kilns, kiln stores and tower. Once complete, these buildings will be converted into a range of luxury apartments and semi-detached properties as well as several modern office spaces.

For us, the preservation of the site’s heritage has always been vital, after the brewery served the town of Kimberley for over 170 years. Large parts of the former brewery will remain within the Brewery Yard phase, adding an additional layer of charm to the heart of this exclusive development.

“From the very start we wanted to retain the history that exists on the site by lovingly restoring the properties that were salvageable from the former brewery,” says our Managing Director, Steve Midgley.

He continues, “The properties in the Brewery Yard will be contemporary but with a traditional twist. The development is also situated within a thriving community – allowing purchasers to enjoy what is essentially city centre living without the price tag, in a popular town, that is commutable from Nottingham,”

“The buildings form such an integral part of the community, so it has always been important for us to get this development right. Many buildings were almost beyond repair when we took control of the site but our team, in partnership with the local authorities, has worked tirelessly to ensure that we deliver a development that we know both purchasers and local residents will be delighted with.” adds Steve.

Those keen to secure a slice of history in the Brewery Yard phase need look no further than the 2-bedroom maltings apartments located in the original Maltings building. Alternatively, the 4-bedroom, 3 storey semi-detached properties lovingly converted within the original Kiln Stores Building will offer a modern living space ideally suited to a range of purchasers.

Plans for the development are currently available to view with the show apartment expected to be revealed in October 2019.
