Fair chance for East Midlands golfers
Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and Loughborough, Leicestershire, [13 May 2005] Encouraged by the good weather, businesses from around the East Midlands have teamed up to raise more than £2350 for the Loughborough-based charity Rainbows Children’s Hospice.
The money was raised during Fairgrove Homes’ annual charity golf tournament and prize giving dinner at Morley Hayes golf club in Derbyshire this week. Building on last year’s record attendance, Fairgrove saw the number of teams entering the tournament soar to 25. “With four people in each team, attendance rocketed by 25%,” says Steve Midgley, managing director of Fairgrove Homes and organiser of the tournament. “With a further 20 people attending the evening dinner we feel very pleased with the turnout and money made. We’d like to thank all the players, whose generosity in purchasing raffle tickets, lottery tickets and green fees throughout the day enabled us to present such a large cheque to Rainbows – enabling us to smash our target for this year. And we’re still receiving money from participants, so we can expect to be giving more money to Rainbows in the coming weeks.
Speaking after being presented with the cheque, Jo Plant, appeals manager at Rainbows Children’s Hospice, said: “It’s an honour to be invited to the golf day. As a children’s hospice for the whole of the East Midlands, we rely on the generosity of local businesses like Fairgrove Homes to help the children in our care. We receive only 6% government funding, so the help that Fairgrove Homes gives in terms of support and donations is essential for our ongoing survival.”
Rainbows Children’s Hospice is Fairgrove’s nominated charity for two years. “Like Rainbows, we’re in our 10th year of operation,” says Steve. “This golf tournament enables us to put something back into the communities in which we work, while making other businesses aware of the good work of charities like Rainbows.”
The event saw mixed fortunes for some of the teams, which included RA Cowan & Partners, Beechtree Construction, Neville Baker (T/A Mortgage Advice), Kedleston Heating, Arnold Laver Kitchens, Morrison Design, Streeter West Chartered Accountants, Mortgage Force, Jackson’s Building Centres, Robert Sanders Menswear, Mick Caddy architects, Belvoir Holdings, Bank of Scotland, Richard Jackson electrician, Ken Hall & Son plumbers, NatWest, Ideal Standard, Freeth Cartwright, Miles & Cash, Roythorne & Co, Chequers Inn, CCF Flooring, Lifestyle Windows, and Catnic Lintels.
Although competition was tight amongst the top teams, the eventual winners were the team from Streeter West Chartered Accountants.
Other prizes awarded during the evening included raffle prizes of wine, whisky and golfing goodies.
