East Midlands, [28 May 2008]Local business people showed that charity begins at home at last week’s fund-raising golf event, organised by Ilkeston-based new homes developer Fairgrove Homes.

Now very much a fixture in the diary of many East Midlands business people, the event, which is in its fifth year, was an outstanding success. Steve Midgley, managing director of Fairgrove Group, says: “We had an exceptional response to our calls for teams and prizes for the event a couple of months ago, so we knew to expect a winner. Even so, we’re astounded by the level of support we’ve received, and we were even more pleased to hand over a cheque for £3,000 to Caroline Hoare of Rainbows Children’s Hospice.”

The event began just after lunchtime with teams representing local businesses teeing off throughout the afternoon. “It was great to welcome old friends back to the tournament and encouraging to see so many new faces – including Andrew Twigge from Trent FM’s Jo & Twiggy weekday breakfast show,” says Steve. “The support has been fantastic – and we have been able to significantly build on the amount of money we raised last year.”

In the evening, attention turned to the clubroom where Fairgrove’s annual charity dinner, prize giving and cheque presentation took place. “There was some fairly stiff competition, but newcomers Angus & The Cowboys eventually stormed home to victory,” says Steve.

He adds: “So many people have got behind the Fairgrove charity golf event. Their generosity before the event in donating prizes and in the evening raffle ensured this was a bumper night smashing all previous records. We are very grateful to everyone for their efforts in backing our endeavours and are delighted to be handing over such a large a cheque to Rainbows Children’s Hospice.”

Fairgrove has committed to supporting Rainbows for two years. “We’ve seen first hand the impact Rainbows has on families coping with a child with a life-limiting condition, by providing expert care and support both to the children and their families,” says Steve. “However, they rely on donations to raise the £2.6 million needed each year to run the hospice, and I believe organisations like Fairgrove can help make a significant difference by getting behind their fundraising appeals.”

About Rainbows Children’s Hospice
Rainbows Children’s Hospice is the only children’s hospice in the East Midlands providing respite, palliative and end-of-life care to life-limited children and support for their families. Children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions come to the hospice for specialist respite stays, symptom management, palliative and end-of-life care. Their families, too, are supported and helped by Rainbows on their difficult journey.
At Rainbows the emphasis is on enriching and making each minute of each short life count. Each child is treated as an individual and helped by the skilled and experienced team to get the most from life and enjoy it to the full.
Rainbows receives less than 6% statutory funding and relies on donations to raise the £2.6 million needed each year to run the hospice.
