Fairgrove Developments appoint local company Acres Architects to begin works on the Brewery Tower in Kimberley.

In one of the final phases of the regeneration of Kimberley Brewery, Fairgrove Developments are proud to announce the appointment of multi-award winning residential specialist Acres Architects to design the conversion of the historic landmark tower.

Acres Architects and Fairgrove will work together to restore the original beauty and character of the grade II listed building, transforming it into luxury apartments. Steve Midgley, Managing Director of Fairgrove commented “Designing new homes within such a locally significant building requires the skills and ideas of specialist architects and designers.”

“Acres Architects are committed to producing the highest quality, industry-leading designs for new build and refurbishment developments within the house building sector specifically focused on bringing this local iconic structure a new lease of life.”

Fairgrove look forward to working alongside Acres Architects in creating new luxury living spaces within the former Brewery Tower which was built in 1861.  The preservation of the site’s heritage has remained a priority for us after the brewery served the town of Kimberley for over 170 years and we continue to keep this at the forefront of our minds as we build future new homes in Kimberley.

When asked what interested Acres Architects in this project, Edward Acres, managing director of Acres Architects said “not only was this a fantastic opportunity to work with Fairgrove Developments, a developer who aligns greatly with our companies core values. It also provided an opportunity to look and work on a project that presents a truly unique once in a lifetime opportunity for residential development within the East Midlands.”

The rest of The Brewery Yard has progressed well over the past year and has seen a number of residents move into the completed Maltings Apartments, The Maltby Townhouses and one of the renovated Kiln Stores.

Be sure to keep a lookout for further updates on the plan and progress of the restoration of The Tower by following us on social media and get in touch by emailing us at thebreweryyard@fairgrove.co.uk or visit www.fairgrove.co.uk

Following the success of last year’s apprentice cohort we are re-opening our application process this National Apprenticeship Week!

This week is National Apprenticeship week and after the success of 2022, we have opened our application process early!

The roles on offer this year are Bricklaying, Joinery, and Painting & Decorating Apprenticeships and are aimed at school leavers and are the perfect route for those who are ready to get straight into the world of work and start earning and learning.

Last year we recruited 6 new apprentices in bricklaying and joinery roles and our 2022 cohort have now settled in and have begun their college courses, the learning is split 80% on-site and 20% learning and the apprentices are already making great progress, and one day we hope they will be the leaders of our future groups of apprentices.

The craft apprenticeships will be based on our sites in Kimberley and Swanwick and training details will be discussed upon successful interviews and we look to interview all successful applicants in June and hope to onboard new starters in September.

At Fairgrove, our main goal with our apprenticeship program is to invest in the next generation of construction industry workers to not only help ease the current skill shortage within the industry but also to support school leavers through their apprenticeship training so they gain industry-recognised qualifications, real-world experience, and real jobs at the end with no cost to the applicant or their parents.

Applications are open on our website (www.fairgrove.co.uk) for both male and female school leavers to join the 2023 cohort and we are very excited to meet the next applicants and our prospective future employees. To find out more information visit www.fairgrove.co.uk/careers or alternatively email careers@fairgrove.co.uk

Join our team as an Apprentice this summer as we open our application process for our 2022 Apprentice cohort!

Fairgrove are keen to invest in the future of the construction industry and have opened our application process for a series of new apprenticeships for 2022.

After a few years off we are once again running our popular apprenticeship scheme which in the past has provided exciting opportunities for 16 – 18-year-olds across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. This year the vacancies include craft apprenticeships in Bricklaying, Joinery, and Painting and Decorating as well as an office-based Construction Support Technician, which is a new role we are offering this year for the first time.

The craft apprenticeships will be based on our sites in Kimberley and Swanwick and training details will be discussed upon successful interviews. The Construction Support Technician apprentice will be based at our Head Office in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, and will be working alongside our Site managers and technical assistant.

All successful applicants will be interviewed in June and we look to onboard new starters in September.

At Fairgrove, we believe in investing in the next generation of construction industry workers and are fully committed to supporting school leavers through their apprenticeship training which offers industry-recognised qualifications, real-world experience, and real jobs at the end with no cost to the applicant or their parents.

Applications are open on our website (www.fairgrove.co.uk) for both male and female school leavers to join the 2022 cohort and we are very excited to re-launch our apprenticeship scheme. To find out more information visit www.fairgrove.co.uk/careers or alternatively email careers@fairgrove.co.uk

Application process is now open for our 2019 apprenticeship cohort!

We are continuing to invest in the future talent of the housing industry after opening our application process for a series of new apprenticeships for 2019.

We’re re-running our popular apprenticeship scheme which has provided exciting opportunities for 16 – 18 year olds across the East Midlands in both 2017 and 2018. The vacancies this year include craft apprenticeships in joinery, bricklaying and decorating as well as office-based apprenticeships in marketing and business admin and management degree apprenticeships.

The announcement comes during National Apprenticeship Week – a government-led initiative which brings together “an annual celebration of apprenticeships” on a national scale.

Applications are open on our website for both male and female school leavers to join the 2019 cohort. Speaking about the re-launch of our apprenticeship scheme, our MD Steve Midgley is excited about the range of opportunities that await the successful candidates and is keen to see more girls joining the construction industry.

“Not all young people want to go to university full time or straight away. Many are now choosing apprenticeships because they offer the chance to gain first-hand, real life experience, off the job training at no cost to the applicant or their parents as well as the chance to achieve a high-level industry-recognised qualification,”

“We are keen to give young people, including more females, these exciting opportunities to learn and work in what is a very rewarding and well paid industry,”

He continues, “Previous apprentices have successfully developed a range of skills – going on to great things within the company. Interest in our 2019 positions is already very high and we would encourage schools, parents and school leavers interested in finding out more about our apprenticeships in the homebuilding sector to visit our website in order to avoid disappointment.”

Daniel Jones joined us in 2017 as a Management Trainee and has benefited significantly from the scheme, as he goes on to explain.

“My apprenticeship has opened my eyes to the many different aspects of life in the housing and construction sectors,” said Daniel.

“From marketing and management to administration and finance, I’ve been fortunate enough to gain experience across all of these areas in a very short space of time, whilst also studying for a degree, part-time, at Derby University,”

He continues, “Fairgrove really look after you and you truly feel like you’re part of a family. I would encourage young people and their parents considering an apprenticeship in the housing sector to get in touch with Fairgrove to find out more because the opportunities open to you are incredibly varied and rewarding!”

Information about the range of apprenticeships available, as well as details on how to apply, can be found by visiting www.fairgrove.co.uk/about-us.

Both Fairgrove and Nelsons named as finalists for the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019

Both ourselves and East Midlands-based law firm Nelsons have been named as joint finalists in the Deal of the Year category for the 2019 East Midlands Bricks Awards.

Organised by East Midlands Business Link, the East Midlands Bricks Awards recognises and celebrates the achievements and high standards set by both companies and individuals within the building sector across the region – including commercial and public projects, offices, industrial, residential and community projects.

This year’s awards night will be held at Trent Bridge Cricket ground in West Bridgford on Thursday 28th March – with 10 category winners announced including Contractor of the Year, Developer of the Year, Deal of the Year and Excellence in Design.

Both Fairgrove and Nelsons have been named as finalists as part of the same entry for Deal of the Year – following an announcement in early 2019 of the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at the Brewery Yard development in Kimberley.

The Brewery Yard is the latest phase of redevelopment and regeneration for the historic former Kimberley Brewery. We began work on the site in 2015 and have since completed the first phase, as well as 75% of the second of five phases of development at the site – which will see a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

Completion of the deal to purchase the remaining land means that the preserved Grade II* listed buildings surrounding the former brewery yard – including the kilns, kiln stores, tower and the maltings – can now be repaired and converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub, containing a range of office spaces to boost the local economy.

Speaking about the news that both Fairgrove and Nelsons have been named as joint finalists, our Sales and Marketing Manager Vanessa Gregory said, “We are delighted to see our deal to acquire the remaining land at The Brewery Yard named as a finalist for the Deal of the Year category at the East Midlands Bricks,”

She continues, “By working in close partnership with Nelsons at every stage of the deal, we have guaranteed the successful completion of the necessary legal requirements of the acquisition process and secured the future of the historic Grade II* listed buildings on the site for future generations to enjoy. We look forward to completing the Brewery Yard phase and continuing the redevelopment of a site which forms an integral part of the local community of Kimberley”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, which represented Fairgrove throughout the purchase process, is delighted with the news and said, “We’ve been working on the Brewery Yard project alongside Fairgrove since 2016. It’s an important and significant development for the town. We are thrilled to have been recognised by the East Midlands Bricks Awards.

“The brewery, which was a major employer in the area, was sold in 2006 and has stood empty ever since. It’s great that the historic buildings, some of which date back to the 19th century, will be restored and preserved for future generations, alongside stylish new homes, cottages and apartments.”

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry unveils Roll of Honour plaque to remember First World War soldiers from former Kimberley Brewery

We unveiled a commemorative plaque in the town of Kimberley on Remembrance Sunday to remember local heroes of the First World War – as the nation marked 100 years since the signing of the armistice.

A special service was held at the Holy Trinity Church in Kimberley on the morning of Sunday 11th November before the Remembrance Day parade through the town and the service continued outside the newly renovated War Memorial.

The plaque, commissioned by Fairgrove, was dedicated by the Rev Canon Barbara Holbrook during the service before being unveiled in its new home in the former brewery yard, by MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry.

Speaking about the new plaque, our MD Steve Midgley said, “During our research we became aware of a Roll of Honour which used to hang in the Board Room and so with the WW1 centenary celebrations this year we thought it would be a good time to make this a permanent memorial to those brewery workers who fought for their country.”

He continued, “Our work to redevelop the Hardys and Hansons Kimberley Brewery site is one of our flagship developments from our 25 years in business. To never forget those men who left the brewery to fight is important for the local community and the wider 100 years commemorations.”

Following the revealing of the plaque, MP for Broxtowe Anna Soubry, said,“It is an honour to unveil this plaque which remembers those men that answered their country’s call during the biggest war this world had witnessed to this point. We must extend significant gratitude to Fairgrove and all those that have worked hard and invested money in order to make this tribute a reality – ensuring these men are remembered for many years to come.”

We are currently developing the site of the former Hardys & Hansons Kimberley Brewery which when completed, will consist of a mixture of townhouses, detached homes and apartments. A significant part of the former brewery is being restored to its former glory in order to remember a business that was an integral part of the town for over 170 years until its closure in 2006.

Company MD Steve Midgley speaks at a special careers day at Heanor Gate Science College

We were delighted to be able to organise and attended a recent careers day at Heanor Gate Science College – speaking to students about the range of careers open to them in the homebuilding sector upon leaving school.

Company MD Steve Midgley, who is also a Governor at the school, helped to plan and coordinate the event with several other guest speakers joining him on the day – including representatives from the nursing sector as well as employees from the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and Rolls Royce.

The aim of the day was to pass on important careers advice to the children with the hope of better informing them about future career paths  – including those outside of further education.

As well as Steve, our Design Assistant and Homebuilding and Skills Partnership Champion Carrie Stenton attended on behalf of Fairgrove to share her expertise to a group of year 10 students. This included explaining the complete build process as well as the range of careers and trades open to people at apprenticeship level and higher.

Speaking after the event, Steve said, “The enthusiasm and interest shown by the students in homebuilding and the range of trades open to them when they leave school was very encouraging to see,”.

He added, “It’s no secret that there is a shortage of young people entering our industry and at Fairgrove, we are committed to meeting the skills shortage – which has been demonstrated through our apprenticeship schemes in areas such as joinery and bricklaying. We hope that through our attendance at the careers day, we have inspired some of the next generation to consider a future career within the homebuilding sector.”

Gemma Tyers, Sixth Form Achievement Leader at Heanor Gate Science College said, “I would like to extend a big thank you to Steve, Fairgrove and all the other guest speakers that gave up their time to attend the careers day,”.

“Having speakers come in and pass on this information is vital because we are aware that not all children want to go to university – so having knowledge of the variety of careers open to them really opens their eyes and will hopefully inspire some of them to consider one of these paths in the future.” she added.

Fairgrove and Nelsons named as finalists for Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards

Both ourselves and East Midlands-based law firm Nelsons, have been named as joint finalists in the Deal of the Year category for the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, recognises both small and large-scale projects and redevelopment schemes from across the midlands – with winners named in 11 categories. This year’s prestigious black tie ceremony will take place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on Thursday 20th June and is set to be attended by businesses, construction firms and local authorities from across the region.

Both companies have been announced as finalists under the same entry in the Deal of the Year category, following an announcement in early 2019 of the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at our Brewery Yard development in Kimberley. News of this latest nomination follows both companies taking home the award for Deal of the Year at The East Midlands Bricks Awards in March this year.

The Brewery Yard is the latest phase of redevelopment and regeneration for the historic former Kimberley Brewery after work began on the site in 2015. The completed development will see a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

Completion of the deal to purchase the remaining land means that the preserved Grade II* listed buildings surrounding the former brewery yard – including the maltings, kilns, kiln stores and tower – can be repaired and converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub – with a range of modern office spaces.

For our Managing Director, Steve Midgley, being named as a finalist alongside Nelsons for the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards is a testament to the company’s ethos and values as a modern house builder that cares about local heritage and communities.

“Not only do we believe in building quality new homes for the purchasers of today, but we are passionate about preserving and redeveloping historic sites wherever possible – such as the Grade II* listed buildings at the former Brewery Yard in Kimberley,” said Steve.

“We had a shared long-term vision for The Brewery Yard with the local authorities and once completed, this phase will fulfill the plans laid out by providing high-end city living and work spaces in an attractive location – without the expensive city centre prices,”

He continues, “Thanks to our close partnership with Nelsons, the necessary legal requirements of the acquisition process have been successfully completed. This enables us to now complete the Brewery Yard phase and continue the redevelopment of a site which forms such an integral part of the community of Kimberley.”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, which represented Fairgrove throughout the purchase process, is delighted with the news and said, “We’ve been working on this development in partnership with Fairgrove for the past three years, so it is fantastic to have been named as joint finalists in the Insider Midlands Residential Property Awards. The Kimberley Brewery site is an important and significant development for the town, which will see historic buildings being restored and preserved for future generations, alongside the construction of stylish new homes, cottages and apartments.”

Fairgrove and Nelsons take home the Deal of the Year award at the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019

Both ourselves and Nelsons are celebrating a joint award-win after both businesses were named as winners in the Deal of the Year category at the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2019.

The annual event brings together construction professionals from across the region to celebrate the achievements and high standards set by both businesses and individuals within the building sector throughout the previous twelve months.

We put forward a joint entry for the Deal of the Year category following the successful purchase completion of the remaining land at the Brewery Yard development in Kimberley – formerly home to Hardys and Hansons Brewery and adjacent to our Hansons View development.

Nelsons represented us throughout the purchase process and both businesses were named as winners for a deal which has seen the successful preservation of several historic Grade II* listed buildings at the former brewery yard – including the kilns, kiln stores, tower and the maltings. Restoration of these buildings will see them converted into luxury dwellings and a business hub alongside a range of quality apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes in the sought-after location.

This year’s glittering East Midlands Bricks Awards ceremony was held at Trent Bridge Cricket ground on Thursday 28th March – with ten winners announced on the night. Categories recognised a variety of projects, businesses and individuals for demonstrating excellence in construction including Developer of the Year, Contractor of the Year, Excellence in Design and Deal of the Year.

Our Managing Director Steve Midgley is delighted to see both companies take home the award for Deal of the Year – with the news proving testament to months of hard work that has guaranteed a bright future for the brewery yard.

“It is fantastic to see this landmark deal recognised at such a prestigious event as the East Midlands Bricks Awards – especially when you consider the high calibre of entries this year,” said Steve.

“Throughout every stage of our work at the former Hardys and Hansons Brewery, we have ensured wherever possible that the character and history that exists at the site is retained – and the brewery yard is no exception.”

Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Vanessa Gregory, sees the partnership with Nelsons as crucial to this success and is excited for the future of the development – “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Nelsons because through close collaboration, the future of the historic Grade II* listed buildings has been successfully secured to the benefit of the local community of Kimberley,”

“We are excited to commence work on this latest phase and watch the site continue its highly anticipated transformation.”

Mary Gharmount, associate commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for both organisations and we’re thrilled to have won the award as a partnership.

“Projects such as this are hugely rewarding to work on – it’s great to be able to be part of such a significant development and see the benefits it will have on the local community. I am personally very proud to be part of an award-winning team and look forward to seeing the development come to fruition.”
